You can make this recipe with very less ingredients and within few minutes. This fish fry recipe is my favorite as it can be ready within half an hour and my son love it with a plate of rice or any gravy. He doesn't love spicy foods. So I use less amount of Chilli, if you prefer spicy food then increase the amount of Chilli.
Before we jumped into the recipe let us look at how healthy and nutritious paplet fish is.
Fish is very nutritious for growing kids and choosing best fish for them is also very important. Pomfret is one of such fish that can fulfill all the needs for your growing children.
Pomfret fish has no strong odor and aftertaste and can get cooked quickly. And thus it can be digested easily. It is a single bone fish and can easily be boneless.
You can get three different types of Pomfret fish
• Black Pomfret fish
• White Pomfret fish
• Silver Pomfret fish
It is a seawater fish can be found in Atlantic, Pacific and Indian ocean. It was earlier known as "pamflet" which was originated from a Portuguese word pampo.

Ingredients required
Paplet : 2 fresh medium size paplet.
Spice powder : red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and cumin powder.
Ginger garlic paste : fresh homemade ginger garlic paste gives the best result. Otherwise you can use store brought one as well.
Lemon : one fresh lemon.
Other ingredients : salt as per taste, cooking oil and chopped coriander leaves
Steps to make the recipe
1. Cutting and cleaning
Cut the Paplet into 4 -5 pieces as shown in below picture.2. Marinating
In a mixing bowl mix ginger garlic paste, red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, lemon juice and salt. Add 1 tablespoon oil and mix everything well to make a medium thick masala paste.
Now apply this masala over the pieces of paplet nicely so that all sides are coated well.
Cover and keep them refrigerated to marinate for 1 - 2 hours to absorb all the flavours.
Frying the fish
Heat 2 tablespoon oil in a non stick pan or tawa( heavy cast iron skillet) in medium heat flame. If using tawa then heat in high flame for 1 minute to make it non sticky.When the oil become hot lower the flame to low and place the pieces of marinated Paplet carefully over the pan.
Let them cook for 2 minutes under low flame heat. Fry them in two batches so that we can easily flip.
Again flip them and cook further 2 minutes. Repeat the process and cook all the pieces of Paplet till done. It will take around 6 - 8 minutes to fully cooked and crisp.
Remove them in a serving plate and arrange and serve by topping with fresh cilantro leaves over them.
Is Pomfret (paplet) fish high in Mercury?
This is a question generally asked by many fish lover. The answer is no , Pomfret fish is not high in Mercury level. The permissible level of Mercury in Pomfret is about 1 ppm. And most of the pomfret fish has a low Mercury level.
Can pregnant lady eat Pomfret fish?
Pregnant ladies often worried about taking fish in pregnancy. While most populations suggest no to fish as certain fish absorb Mercury and it can harm baby's developing brain and nervous system. But Pomfret fish doesn't contain high amount of Mercury level. So pregnant ladies can it Pomfret fish.
Pomfret fish is good to eat as it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, vitamin D, protein and low in saturated fatty acids. And another good reason is that Pomfret is not an oily fish. So Pomfret fish is good for health.

Paplet fry is a easy recipe that can be made at home marinated pieces of Paplet are shallow fried in a pan or tawa till crisp golden.

Ingredients
- 2 medium size fresh pomfret fish
- 2 teaspoon ginger garlic paste(or mustard paste)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon red chilli powder(paprika)
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder(any other herbs)
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder( optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt or as per taste
- 3 tablespoon cooking oil
- Chopped Coriander leaves for garnish
- Cut the Pomfret fish into 4 - 5 pieces and wash them properly.
- Remove all the inner organs and clean. Wash under running water for 2 - 3 times.
- Pat them dry completely using a kitchen towel or paper.
- In a mixing bowl add the ginger garlic paste, red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, lemon juice and salt.
- Pour 1 teaspoon oil and whisk everything well to make a masala.
Making Paplet fry
- Apply the masala with the pieces nicely to coat from all sides and let them marinate for 2 hours.
- Heat oil in a tawa or pan in medium flame and when hot enough lower the flame to low.
- Place the marinated pieces one by one on it and cook for 2 minutes.
- Flip them to another side and futher cook for 2 minutes.
- Cook them similarly till crisp golden.
- Remove and serve hot.

- Fry Pomfret fish is served as an appetizer or starter. So it is served with green chutney ( cilantro mint sauce) , lemon wedges and some onion slices.
- It can served as a side dish also with steam rice, curry( fish curry) .
- Marinating for more than 30 minutes is important to achieve the best results.
- You can use a whole pomfret for the recipe. Make sure to remove all inner organs and clean. And make 4 - 5 incisions on both sides.
