Before we jump into the recipe let us look at how beneficial a hot and sour soup is.

What is Hot n Sour soup
Hot and Sour soup is a spicy soup made by using some healthy vegetables like mushroom , carrot, cabbage simmering in stock water and seasoning with salt pepper and chilly sauce and tempered with vinegar. Herbs like ginger, garlic , green chili and bamboo shoots are used.
You can make either a non vegetarian version of this soup by adding pork , chicken and beef or a vegetarian version by using beans , carrot, tofu, cabbage , mushroom and tomato.
Due to the use of red chilly sauce, green chili paste and pepper powder, hot and sour soup become spicy. Vinegar gives the sour flavour.
Ingredients required
Vegetables : You can use as per your choice. For resturant style soup use vegetables like cabbage, carrot and tomato.
Herbs : Bamboo shoot is a main herbs for the recipe. Other herbs includes ginger, garlic and green chili.
Sauce : red chilly sauce and dark soya sauce. You can even use green chili sauce to increase the heat.
Mushroom : The original recipe requires Shitake mushroom but button mushroom also work fine.
Vinegar : any good quality vinegar can be used. Preferably used rice vinegar.
Chicken : boneless chicken breasts.
Egg : one beaten egg.
Salt : as per your taste.
Steps to make the recipe
Preparation
1. First you need to slice the chicken breast into thin slice or strips and then chopped them very finely. You can use boil chicken instead. Just boil the chicken breast till cooked and then chopped finely.
Here I am using the raw chicken pieces as it gives more juice to soup and make it more delicious and yummy.2. Take a deep vessel pan or wok and heat 1/2 teaspoon oil and saute ginger and garlic in high flame for few seconds.
3. Add the chopped tomatoes and saute further stirring continuously .
4. Now add the chicken pieces and stir for 1 minute. Then add the mushroom pieces and further saute for 30 seconds.
5 Add the red Chilly Paste and red chilly sauce and mix . You can even add some green chili paste to make it little more hot and spicy .
6. Now add one full cup of water and let it boil for 10 second. Further add the cabbage and carrots slice , bamboo shoots, salt and white pepper powder.
7. Simmer for 1 more minutes. Pour the corn flour water mixture into the soup and simmer further.
8. Now pour the dark soya sauce into the soup mixture and simmer. Check the colour and consistency of the soup. If it is too thick then add water.
And if it is too thin then add little more corn flour water mixture into the soup.
Similarly you can pour more soya sauce to make it more dark in colour.
9. Now pour the beaten egg circular wise into the soup and simmer for few seconds, further add the rice vinegar into the soup.

10. Sprinkle some Cilantro leafs and remove the soup into a bowl and serve hot.
Difference between hot and sour soup and manchow soup
Both these two soup are considered as healthy soup and has tremendous health benefits.
- The basic difference between them is that hot and sour soup is more hot and spicy than manchow soup. Red Chilly Paste and red chilli sauce is used in hot and sour soup whereas these two are not used in manchow soup.
- Hot and sour soup is little bit tangy and sour due to the use of vinegar but in manchow soup vinegar is not used.
The flavors of hot and sour soup comes from the ingredients used to make it . Such as red chilly sauce gives it the hotness flavors and vinegar gives the tangy sour flavors.

Ingredients
- 1 chicken breast
- 2 tablespoon julienne cabbage and carrots
- 1 tablespoon chopped tomato.
- 2 mushroom finely sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon chopped ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon chopped garlic
- 1/4 teaspoon green chilli paste
- 1/4 teaspoon chopped bamboo shoots
- 1/4 teaspoon while pepper powder
- 1/2 tablespoon red chilly paste
- 1/3 tablespoon red chilly sauce
- 1/4 tablespoon dark soya sauce
- 1/4 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoon beaten egg
- Salt as per taste
How to make the recipe
One cup of hot n sour contains approximately 91 calories which may vary from recipes that is used .
- Slice the chicken breast into thin strips and chopped them finely. You can boil and chopped the chicken breast as well.
- Heat half teaspoon oil in a deep vessel pan or wok and saute ginger, garlic in high flame for 30 seconds.
- Add chopped tomatoes and saute for another few seconds.
- Further add the chopped chicken and saute for one minute or till tender.
- Slow the flame to low and add the mushrooms and stir for a while.
- Mix the red chilly paste and red chilly sauce and stir.
- Now pour one cup water or low sodium chicken stock and simmer.
- Add the cabbage and carrot slice, salt , bamboo shoots and white pepper powder. And simmer for a minute.
- Pour corn flour slurry and stir to mix evenly and simmer.
- Now add the dark soya sauce into the soup and simmer.
- Check the seasoning and thickness of soup and pour a beaten egg circular wise into the soup.
- Simmer the soup for a minute and pour few drops rice vinegar into the soup.
- Stir and sprinkle some chopped coriander leaves and remove to serve.
